Koryo Taekwondo Academy Programs for Children
Dear Parent, My name is Sean Cooper, I'm the owner and head instructor of one of Saskatoon's most well respected martial arts school, the Koryo Taekwondo Academy. Throughout my 18 years in Taekwondo I have seen many thousands of children benefit from the unique character building tools found in the martial arts. I would like to take this opportunity to explain to you how our school can provide your child with the tools to succeed. As you well know, raising children is the most difficult job you can have, yet its rewards are limitless. Preparing children for the challenges life throws at them requires love, understanding and education. How do you teach them the discipline, and perseverance needed to overcome the obstacles and hardships they may face? This type of education is not found in our schools anymore, nor is it often taught on the soccer field or in the hockey rink, yet traits like confidence, perseverance, and self control have a profound effect on what a child can accomplish.
"Knowledge in the Mind, Honesty in the Heart, and Strength in the Body" At Koryo Taekwondo we emphasize that to become better martial artists and indeed better people we need to cultivate, "Knowledge in the mind, honesty in the heart and strength in the body." This is the student creed that our Little Dragons and Tiny Tigers learn early in their training, and while it takes time for them to truly understand the meaning of the words, their actions in and out of class immediately begin to reflect the spirit of the phrase. Our children's programs are fun and challenging, and as a result our Tiny Tigers and Little Dragons love to practice. We use the joy and enthusiasm they show in their Taekwondo training to hook them on learning in general. We encourage our Koryo Children to work as hard in school as they do in Taekwondo class, in fact their progress through the ranks depends on a good work ethic at school. Our students learn to take pride in "Knowledge in the Mind". The core concept of "Honesty in the Heart" is ingrained into our students through our emphasis on the five tenets of Taekwondo; Respect, Modesty, Integrity, Courage, and Indomitable Spirit.
Respect This is demonstrated and practiced in every class that your child attends. Our Tiny Tigers and Little Dragons learn early that in order to earn respect for themselves they must in turn be polite and courteous to others. Modesty Children in our programs learn to value their own sense of accomplishment more than the praise heaped on them by their peers, as such Koryo students have little need to brag or boast about their skills and abilities. Integrity As all children do, our Dragons and Tigers crave attention, through positive role model leadership they learn that honesty and trustworthiness is the best way to earn the respect and admiration of their peers. Courage Our students learn that through the physical and mental skills developed in class, they can overcome most any obstacle. They discover that courage is not the absence of fear, but rather doing what is right and what must be done in the face of fear. Indomitable Spirit Finally our Little Dragons and Tiny Tigers learn to drive towards their goals with every ounce of perseverance that they possess. For Koryo students there is no giving up once they are on the track of something that they truly believe is worthwhile.
